Happy Halloween

"Mario Kart! Don't forget Luigi!"
Some of Mr. Sterken's Interior Design class with their Luigi Pumpkin

Luigi Cart Pumpkin

Every year we have a home room pumpkin carving contest at my school on Halloween.

This is my home room's entry in that contest. I think my interior design students did a great job!

They came up with the idea and concept and decorated and built it in about 45 minutes.

They worked really well as a group.

While some classes spend days ahead of time this group didn't prepare beforehand at all and worked with what we had on hand in the classroom!

Bedroom Design Boards

My grade 11 Interior Design class has just completed a project where they needed to redesign/decorate their own bedrooms.

  • It started with a site measure of their own rooms. For many of them it was the first time they had used a tape measure or measure using imperial units.
  • Next they created preliminary sketches of the floor plans.
  • Meanwhile they were selecting new furniture. They were restricted to furniture from IKEA. This allowed them to shop on-line and keep their budgets down.
  • Then they created scale floor plans with pencil and paper and started playing around with furniture placement.
  • Once the furniture placement was decided they inked the plans.
  • Colour images of the furniture and the inked plans were then added to the design boards.
  • A complete cost estimate was also done. Including new flooring material costs and paint costs. So the students needed to do area calculations for the flooring, and walls for paint.
  • Finally these cost estimate spreadsheets where printed and attached to the back of the board.

City Scape 2 Point Perspective Drawings

So my Grade 10 Technological Design class just completed drawing a city block drawing in 2 point perspective.

The requirements where to draw a City block in 2 point perspective.

The city block had to include:
  • Park
  • Church
  • Commercial building(s)
  • Residential building(s)
  • Parking
  • Street signs & lights

I think they did an awesome job of completing the project to specifications and on time!

Perspective Sketching

Drawing in one and two point perspective can be an effective way to communicate design ideas.

My interior design students were taught the technique for drawing in one and two point perspective and then asked to create drawings of furniture both ways.

Another aspect of this project was to learn how to use rendering markers to create realistic lighting and shadows on the furniture to further add to the three dimensinal aspect of the sketches.

These ones in particular turned out quite well considering this was the first time putting these tools and techniques into practice.
